Transportation Biking Biking is easy and fun in Berlin!
If there is a bike lane on the side walk, you are expected to ride on it in the same direction as traffic.
If there is not a bike lane, you are expected to ride in the street.
There are many bike trails, including one along the Teltowkanal that goes from Kleinmachnow, through Steglitz, and beyond. This is a lovely way to ride to work.
Lock your bike!
Bike theft is not uncommon in Berlin.
Use a heavy-duty lock, and lock it around the body, tire, and locking post, away from the ground.
Walking
Walk on green; don’t walk on red (you may get yelled at if you do not obey this).
Sidewalks commonly have bike lanes...don’t walk in them!
Look both ways before crossing streets AND bike lanes. This takes some getting used to; the bikes won’t yield for you.
Public Transportation BVG = Berlin Verkehrsbetriebe (Berlin Transportation Service) A BVG map is invaluable. You can get a comprehensive map with all bus, streetcar/tram, and train lines for under €5 at a BVG ticket box or shop (at many stations). Tickets bought from the bus driver do not need to be validated.
You can buy four single way tickets at one time for a reduced price (€2.05/AB ticket).
